Frequently Asked Questions
D- After wanting to be the next Nancy Drew, I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I’ve been writing since I can remember, from poems as a small child, to writing my first “novel” in middle school. I’ve always loved books, and writing has always been a fun escape for me.
M- Writing wasn’t a decision so much as a necessity. Somewhere in my house I have a box of old notebooks filled with original stories (starting with a Swamp Monster story I wrote sometime in elementary school for a homework assignment) and fanfiction ideas/scenes. And when I found someone who loved writing just as much as me? Enter my ‘platonic soul mate’ and co-author.

A writing class can absolutely be beneficial, especially if you want to make writing your primary focus. I (Moore) always wanted to take a creative writing course, and I try to attend writing workshops when I can at different events (like DragonCon!), but nothing formal. For authors like us, where it’s more a passion project than a career goal, I would say: don’t let it be something that holds you back from giving publishing your work a go!
We did start to look at the traditional route, but in the end we went with indie publishing. Go big or go home, right? We started our own publishing company: Dorian Moore Books, and took off from there! It was something that we dragged our feet about for a while, because it can be really intimidating to let the rest of the world in on something that matters so much to you, but we are so glad that we took the plunge, and did it in a way that allowed us to maintain full control over the Mystifying universe. Setting the stage for Myst then opened the door for us to put our solo works out there as well.
We both now live in Delaware, fairly close to our childhood homes and where we first met, after a few years of living away from one another. Now we can get together for coffee and girls’ movie nights! (Not to mention in-person writing sessions!)
The Dorian half spends her daytime hours playing pretend working as a preschool teacher.
The Moore half talks to people all day as a therapist.
Of course! Don’t you want more access to our crazy? We only send our newsletter once a month. We put in information about events and publishing details, but we also add in all kinds of inside looks from the first look at artwork, facts about our friendship and writing, and extra scenes!
